[K-Policy] [2026 Update] 난임치료휴가 & 정부 시술비 지원 Guide: Maximizing Your Fertility Journey in Korea 🇰🇷✨

Hello everyone! It’s 88한 열매맘, your friendly neighborhood and working mom living in Seoul. 🌸

6 DAYS LEAVE + 2 DAYS PAID LEAVE

임신을 준비하는 과정은 정말 설레지만, 동시에 직장생활과 병행하기란 결코 쉽지 않죠. Especially when you start Fertility Treatments (난임 시술), the frequent hospital visits and the physical/mental toll can be overwhelming. As a Team Manager (팀장) managing my team's schedule and a working mom myself, I truly understand that struggle.

Actually, I have a very personal story to share. 저도 작년에 난임휴가를 받아서 2일 유급휴가를 포함한 총 6일간 난임치료휴가를 받았어요. I remember thinking that I absolutely couldn't skip taking leave on the day of my Egg Retrieval (난자 채취). It was a physically demanding process, but thanks to that time to focus on my health and recovery, I was finally able to meet my precious baby, Yeolmae (열매). 👶❤️

The big news for 2026 is that the government has heard our voices! 2026년에는 난임 부부들을 위한 정책이 더욱 강력하게 업그레이드되었습니다. Not only has the leave duration increased to 6 days, but the actual "pay" (allowance) for SME employees has been expanded to 2 days with an updated daily cap. For our foreign residents and office workers waiting for their little ones, I’ve meticulously organized the 'Money' and 'Eligibility' details for the 2026 expansion.

한국에서 거주하며 아이를 기다리는 우리 외국인 주민분들과 직장인분들을 위해, 제가 꼼꼼하게 정리해 드릴게요!

Navigating the 2026 Fertility Leave Expansion

2026 KR Fertility Leave Update

[Eligibility] Who Can Apply? (지원 대상)

The 2026 policy is more inclusive than ever, specifically targeting those who contribute to the Korean economy regardless of nationality.

The 2026 policy focuses on ensuring that no worker—regardless of nationality—is left behind during their journey to parenthood. To receive the Fertility Treatment Leave Allowance (난임치료휴가 급여), you must meet the following criteria:

  • Employment Status (근로자 자격):

    • You must be a worker at a Priority Support Company (우선지원대상기업), which generally includes most Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

    • Large conglomerates (대기업) are still required to provide the leave and pay for the first 2 days themselves, but government allowance is specifically for SME workers to reduce the burden on smaller businesses.

  • Foreign Resident Inclusion (외국인 지원):

    • If you are a registered foreign resident (ARC holder) and an employee, you are entitled to this leave and pay.

    • Crucial Condition: You must be enrolled in Employment Insurance (고용보험). Most professional visas (E-7, F-2, F-5, F-6) are covered.

  • Insurance Unit Period (피보험단위기간):

    • The total sum of your Employment Insurance coverage days must be 180 days or more before the day your leave ends.

  • Application Window:

    • You can apply starting 1 month after the day you began your leave, up until 12 months after the day your leave ended.

Medical Expense Support (난임부부 시술비 지원):

  • Medical Diagnosis: You must be diagnosed with infertility (난임진단서) by a government-designated clinic.

  • Residency: At least one spouse must be a Korean national, or if both are foreigners, you must have a valid ARC and be enrolled in the National Health Insurance (국민건강보험).

  • Common-law Couples (사실혼): Foreigners in common-law marriages are eligible but must provide a notarized 'Certificate of Singlehood' (미혼증명서) from their embassy and proof of one year of cohabitation.

  • Income Limit: Abolished (폐지) in 2026. Most regions no longer look at your household income for infertility procedure support.

[Benefit] What Are the 2026 Upgrades? (지원 혜택)

The 2026 updates focus on reducing the "waiting anxiety" and providing support for advanced medical choices. In 2026, the government expanded the paid support to ensure workers don't lose income while undergoing critical procedures like egg retrieval.

1. Increased Duration (휴가 기간 확대)

  • Total Leave: 6 days per year (Up from 3 days).

  • Paid Portion (유급): First 2 days are PAID (Up from 1 day).

  • The remaining 4 days are unpaid, but your employer cannot refuse them.

2. Allowance Amount (지원 금액)

The government provides a subsidy to cover your wages during those 2 paid days.

  • Support Level: 100% of your Normal Wage (통상임금 100%).

  • Daily Upper Limit (1일 상한액): 84,210 KRW.

    • Note: If your daily normal wage is higher than this, the government pays 84,210 KRW, and for SME workers, the employer is encouraged to cover the difference, though the government subsidy is capped.

  • Frozen Egg Thawing (냉동난자 해동비): New support of 300,000 KRW per session (up to 2 times) for those using previously frozen eggs.

Note on Frozen Eggs: If you froze your eggs previously for "social reasons" (career, etc.), you can now receive support for the thawing and embryo transfer costs once you are ready for pregnancy.

  • No Income Limit (소득기준 폐지): Most regions have removed income caps for procedure subsidies, meaning dual-income foreign couples are now fully eligible.

  • Notice Validity: Your medical support decision notice is now valid for 6 months (extended from 3 months).

👉 Pro Tips: Expert Insights

As a team manager who has personally navigated this, here is my Expert Tip for you:

  1. The "2+4" Strategy: In 2026, many companies (especially SMEs) now offer 2 paid days. Use these two days specifically for the Egg Retrieval (난자 채취) and the Embryo Transfer (배아 이식). Use the remaining 4 unpaid days for the critical recovery period immediately after.

  2. Use the 'Paid Day' Wisely: Since the first day is paid, use it for the actual procedure (egg retrieval or transfer). Use the remaining unpaid days for recovery if needed.

  3. Managerial Diplomacy: If your manager is worried about costs, remind them that for SMEs, the government (Employment Insurance) reimburses the 2 paid days (up to 84,210 KRW each). It costs the company almost nothing! In 2026, the 25% post-payment system (사후지급금 폐지) has been widely abolished for parental and treatment-related benefits. You get your money immediately when you apply, providing vital cash flow during expensive treatments.

  4. Regional "Plus" Subsidies: If you live in Seoul, check the Seoul Pregnancy & Childbirth Information Center. They often provide extra "Traffic Expense" (교통비) or "Traditional Medicine" (한방 지원) subsidies for residents.

  5. Privacy Protection: Many foreign workers worry about their visa or job security. Legally, you only need to provide a "Hospital Visit Confirmation." You do not have to disclose the specific medical details of your infertility to your coworkers.

  6. Frozen Egg Advantage: If you are a single professional woman who chose Social Egg Freezing years ago, 2026 is the year to act. The 300,000 KRW thawing support significantly lowers the entry barrier for starting your family.

  7. For Foreign Residents: If your documents are from your home country, please ensure they have the Apostille. I've seen many friends get delayed because they didn't have the official seal from their embassy.

  8. Community Health Centers (보건소) are your best friends: Even if you think you aren't eligible, just visit! The staff are usually very helpful in guiding you through the paperwork for foreigners.
