Traveling with kids or during pregnancy can be physically and financially draining. However, the 2026 K-Policy updates have made train travel much more affordable for us.

Whether you are an expat living in Korea with an ARC or a local mom, these benefits are designed to make our lives easier and lighter on the wallet. Let's look at how we can travel smarter and cheaper with KTX and SRT this year.๐Ÿฆ

KTX & SRT Discount Structure

In 2026, the Korean government and rail operators (Korail & SR) have further simplified the verification process.

The most significant change is the seamless integration with digital IDs and the 'Government 24' (์ •๋ถ€24) system, allowing immediate eligibility checks without carrying physical medical certificates.

[Eligibility] Who can apply?

1. KTX Mom-pyeonhan (๋ง˜ํŽธํ•œ KTX):

  • Target: All pregnant women registered in the national system and one accompanying guardian.

  • Period: From the date of registration until 1 year after childbirth. (2026 update: The extension to 1 year postpartum is now standard to support recovering moms).

  • Foreigners: If you have an ARC (Alien Registration Card) and are covered by National Health Insurance, you are 100% eligible.

2. SRT Pink (์ž„์‚ฐ๋ถ€ ํ• ์ธ):

  • Target: SR members who are pregnant + 1 accompanying person.

  • Period: From registration until 1 year after the expected delivery date.

3. SRT Yellow (๋‹ค์ž๋…€ ๊ฐ€์กฑ ํ• ์ธ):

  • Target: Families with 2 or more children (including the fetus/unborn child) under the age of 25.

  • Key Change: Starting in late 2025/2026, the definition of "Multi-children" (๋‹ค์ž๋…€) has been firmly set to 2 children across almost all national benefits.

[Benefit] How much can you save?

KTX & SRT Discount for Pregnant moms

1. KTX Benefits:

  • 40% Discount on the designated 'Mom-pyeonhan' seats.

  • Free upgrade: Unlike regular discounts, this often applies to the Special Class (ํŠน์‹ค) seat upgrade fee as well! If you buy a standard ticket, you might get a free upgrade to a Special Class seat (subject to availability).

  • Note: The base fare (์ตœ์ €์šด์ž„) is not discounted; the percentage applies to the portion above the base fare.

2. SRT Benefits:

  • 30% Discount for both 'Pink' (Pregnant) and 'Yellow' (Multi-children) categories.

  • The discount is applied to the adult fare. For the Multi-children discount, at least 3 family members (including at least 1 adult) must travel together to see the maximum family benefit, but the individual 30% applies to the registered members.

  • Note: The discount applies to the portion of the fare exceeding the minimum fare (์ตœ์ €์šด์ž„).

[How to Apply] Step-by-Step Guide

For my fellow expats and busy moms, the "One-Stop" service is your best friend.

Step 1: Register on 'Government 24' (์ •๋ถ€24)

  1. Log in to the Government 24 website or mobile app using your Digital Certificate (Joint Cert or Simple Auth like Kakao/Pass).

  2. Search for "Mom-pyeonhan Imshin" (๋ง˜ํŽธํ•œ ์ž„์‹ ) service.

  3. Check the box for "KTX Pregnant Woman Discount" and "SRT Discount Service."

  4. This links your pregnancy status from your medical records directly to the rail companies.

Step 2: Korail / SR Membership Registration

  1. Make sure you are a member of Korail Talk and SRT apps.

  2. Your name and phone number must match the information on Gov24 and your ARC.

  3. For Multi-children (SRT): Go to the SRT website -> 'My Page' -> 'Multi-children Family Registration' (๋‹ค์ž๋…€ ๊ฐ€์กฑ ๋“ฑ๋ก). You will need to input your family members' names and birthdates.

Step 3: Booking the Discounted Ticket

  • KTX: Open Korail Talk App -> Select 'Discount/Regular Tickets' (ํ• ์ธ/์ •๊ธฐ๊ถŒ) -> Select 'Mom-pyeonhan KTX'.

  • SRT: Open SRT App -> Select 'Special Discounts' (๊ณต๊ณตํ• ์ธ) -> Select 'SRT Pink' or 'SRT Yellow'.

[Checklist] Don't Forget These!

  • ID Card: You must carry your ARC(์™ธ๊ตญ์ธ๋“ฑ๋ก์ฆ) or Mobile ID when boarding. Conductors occasionally check to prevent ticket scalping.

  • Companion Rule: For KTX, the guardian can only get a discount if they are traveling with the pregnant woman. You cannot give your ticket to someone else!

  • Booking Window: Discounted seats are limited per train. In 2026, it is highly recommended to book at least 2 weeks in advance, especially for Friday afternoons and Sundays.

  • Limited Seats: Discounted seats are limited. Book early!

  • Cancellation Policy: Standard cancellation fees apply. If you cancel at the last minute, you lose the "limit" count for that month (usually 8 times per month).

  • 2026 Policy: Postpartum benefits have been extended. Even if you gave birth last year, check your eligibility again!

Expats are often excluded because their names in the rail app don't match their ARC. Make sure your name is in ALL CAPS and in the exact order as your ARC. (์˜ˆ: DOE JANE). If there is a single space difference, the 'Government 24' system will fail to verify your status. Also, ensure your phone carrier's name matches too!

Real World Advice:

  • KTX Special Class is worth it: During pregnancy, the extra legroom in KTX Special Class is a lifesaver. Since the discount applies to the upgrade, it’s often only a few thousand won more than a regular seat.

  • Use 'Mom-pyeonhan' for Commuting: If you live in a satellite city (like Cheonan or Pyeongtaek) and work in Seoul, these 8-times-a-month discounts can significantly reduce your commuting costs.
